A Woman's Worth by Tracy Price-Thompson

A Womans Worth: A Novel by Tracy Price-Thompson

A Woman's Worth by Tracy Price-Thompson

A Womans Worth: A Novel, is an eye-opening novel. With characters with names like Poppa Daddy, Dimples, Sugar Baby and Abeni, you know that you are in for a fantastic ride. Bishop “Chicken” Johnson, comes from a small town in Alabama. As a young boy he witness’s his parents murder and comes to grips with growing up in a whorehouse. Where the prostitutes help raise him in a way that made him surrender to respect and appreciate women and the feminine/parental guidance of these protective and knowledgeable women. Not to mention his father who in a way contributed to Bishop growing up too quick due to an deadly incident in Birdtown, AL.

Tracy Price-Thompson brings each and every character to life. Bishop has to get away as soon as possible, with no family alive to protect him any longer. Bishop was exposed to many things in life; but even still he grew to love boxing, and desired a better life for himself, with hopes of having a strong relationship that his mother and father had. He travels to Africa with the Peace Corps, to get away from city officials.

In Kenya, Abeni is the only child of a powerful chief and traditional man. Because of her country’s tribal rituals she is forced to undergo female circumcision in her youth. She’s even sewn up vaginally to prove virginity to whoever her father chooses marry his daughter. Tracy Price-Thompson puts you in the realm of the physical mutilation, emotionally damaged, sexually assaulted llittle girl that grows up to be beautiful woman. Unfortunately her childhood ultimately causes her to isolate herself, and even becoming promiscuous.

When Bishop and Abeni meet, it was love at first site for Bishop. Abeni on the other hand still held up her defense mechanism by shunning him away. Knowing he would not be accepted by her powerful father he fought for Abeni. With determination, Bishop wins Abeni over letting her in on his also painful childhood. They fall in love and heal each other in the process. Together they seem to have overcome their past, when they bring a beautiful baby girl into the world.

The ending of this book has stayed with me since reading it. It’s so refreshing feeling as if you’re with Abeni and walking beside Bishop.  A Womans Worth: A Novel, is something to be reckoned with! Topics brought up in this book causes one to reflect on what’s really going on in our world. Bringing many of the controversial effects of female circumcision, prostitution, survival and self-love. I had to personally contact Mrs.Tracy Price-Thompson, to let her know the extreme affect this novel had on me as an African-American woman. It’s emotional, romantic, thought-provoking, and confronts real life consequences. I savored the taste of this book word for word, it’s definitely a work of art. I laughed out loud and cried throughout Bishop and Abeni’s journey.

5 out of 5 stars Superb

This book made me cringe in pain for Abeni and all the abuse she went though, especially the female circumcision. After I read this novel, I thought about it for weeks after, I'm glad you going through the old and new novels.

I loved this novel just knowing how Bishop treating Abeni made me rejoice.
