In The Father’s eyes
I’m His child.
His delight.
He wants me here,
and I belong. –Cherie Burbach

The author of this article had the pleasure and privilege of asking Cheri a few questions regarding her poetry, writing career, and expertise in an effort to produce a more intimate article with a local poet. For more information about her work and books, please visit her website.

Please describe the effect which developed personally when you wrote your first poem?

I wrote my first poem when I was about eight about gratitude, of all things. Afterward I had the most wonderful feeling of satisfaction. I loved being able to put thoughts and emotions down on paper in a way that might be pleasing to other people. After that first poem, writing also became a "safe place" for me when I was a kid. If I was dealing with something confusing or hurtful, poetry became a way I would work through it all.

How does writing poetry dovetail with the other aspects of your writing career?

My second grade teacher wanted me to try poetry because the short stories I wrote back then were "poetic." I still tend to write in a way that brings about thoughts and feelings to the forefront, even if it's a short story or novel. Poetry helps me describe things in my other writing works in a much different way, than say, if I was writing a news story.

Who is your favorite poet from history which you consider as an influence?

I didn't start reading other poets' works until about ten years ago. Immediately I was drawn to the rhythm and soulfulness of Maya Angelou's poetry. I love her voice, both in the physical sense and on paper. Listening to her read is like music to my ears. I also enjoy Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson.

Do you have any words of wisdom for new writers/poets?

Write every day! Never wait for "the right time" or even a "muse." Writing is as much an exercise as it is a creative act. Also, let your own natural voice come through. If you don't have a good sense of voice yet, keep writing until you do. Ask for honest feedback for your own, and take it all (even the compliments) with a grain of salt. Most of all, support other writers!

Thank you Cherie!
