Through its 'PlayStation Experience' - a touring 18-wheeler loaded with the latest software - Sony has made great strides in bringing the latest and the greatest video games to Vancouver. It takes something else entirely, however, to bring Vancouver into video games. Something like the 2010 Winter Olympics. The fever leading up to the January kick-off has already begun, with politicians donning patriotic olympic mittens, rural communities beautifying local hot spots for the crowds to follow the symbolic torch and Sega hard at work on another virtual rendition of the world's most historic athletic event. In times past, the publisher's family-friendly Sonic & Mario spin-offs have been the real gems resulting from their long-time license to the games, and this year's Sonic & Mario at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii and DS) was no exception. For PS3 gamers, however, the realistic Vancouver 2010: The Official Videogame of the Winter Olympic Games is a promising development.
Set for release in January with an affordable price point of $49.99, the The Official Videogame looks to swap up the franchise's mediocre reputation by providing fewer game modes with more depth and polish. Fewer doesn't mean few. With 14 events, there's sure to be something for everyone. Highlights include the Large Hill Ski Jump and Two-Man Bobsledding. Early multimedia suggests that all events boast the same smooth, fresh visuals and slick frame rates. Other standout features include first-person viewpoints available in all events, online and local multiplayer and dual-joystick control for added balance and precision.
Developed by Eurocom, the game hasn't yet received an ESRB rating but appears to be suitable for a wide age range. For more info, check out the official website at http://www.olympicvideogames.com/vancouver2010/
