According to Sony, the Playstation 3’s production costs have dropped significantly since the system’s launch in 2006.
It is believed that the cost to manufacture a PS3 at launch was around $800 and according to Sony Corp’s CEO Nobuyuki Oneda, that number has dropped by about seventy percent. As TVG reported, “the 70% decrease suggests that costs have come down to around $240 (£146) per unit.” The real significance of the seventy percent drop is that Sony is finally making a profit on their hardware.
Losses in hardware sales for consoles are nothing new; in fact, almost all systems cost more than their price tag to produce. Many consoles, like the PS3, do not see a profit until a few years after launch.
However, those of you getting excited that this will result in a price drop for the ‘$400 and up’ console might want to relax. Sony has been posting significant losses on the PS3 for a long time and they will almost certainly leave the price where it is to make up for some of their losses. Rather than lowering the price, Sony may simply release the long rumored PS3 Slim in place of the current model.

I think you may be right. Sony may not drop the price at all to make up the losses of the last 2.5 years. And the slim model may or may not have heating issues. I'm gonna run out and get me a ps3-fat 80GB within the coming week. Hopefully I can find a silver one. If not, black'll do.
