Pima County voters were given insight into how Arizona Sen. John McCain stands of the war in Afghanistan when he spoke to the Senate Arms Service Committee on February 24, 2010.  McCain is running for reelection to retain his seat in the Senate.

McCain said:

“Training the Afghan Security Forces is critical to our success in this war.  We must ensure that our Afghan partners have the capability to decisively defeat the Taliban and al-Qaeda in order to create the security necessary for the Afghan Government to provide essential services and good governance to its people.  We must build this capacity rapidly.  We must prepare the Afghan Security Forces to take the lead in this fight so the Afghan people can have confidence in the ability of their own institutions to protect them and so we can begin the process of drawing down our forces with confidence that Afghanistan will not again become a haven for international terrorism.  Only a mature and capable Afghan Army and Afghan National Police Force can bring security, stability and peace to the people of Afghanistan.  And only when that force is trained, ready, and capable will victory be assured."

During McCain's speech, he referred to the tax dollars that had been squandered during the rebuilding of Iraq and that the same difficult circumstances exist in Afghanistan, which has an even less developed infrastructure.
