Senator John McCain's negative response to the speech made by President Obama on January 27, 2010 was sent in a message to his supporters the next day.  His attack was mostly focused on spending and criticism of of Obama's proposed discretionary spending freeze, calling "political rhetoric."

McCain, who is running for re-election in Arizona, reiterated his own conservative values of reduced spending, low taxes, and a strong national defense.

In his criticism of Obama's first year in office, he reminded constituents that

"President and Congressional Democrats have amassed a $12.4 trillion deficit that is  growing      every day"

Sen. McCain said that Obama's non-discretionary spending freeze is a good start but writes that the President needs to veto bills with pork bill spending and begin creating jobs for the thousands of out-of-work Americans.

"...trillion-dollar, big government stimulus packages are not the answer for creating jobs. To    stimulate the our economy for job growth, we need payroll tax cuts, tax incentives for small businesses and an assurance that the Democrats will not raise taxes."

McCain included that the election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts is a message that the American people want change in Washington and an end to big government solutions to problems like health care. He also made note of the fact that he was an early supporter of Senator-elect Scott Brown's campaign and that he would work with the senator-elect to block government-run health care, tax increases and increased federal spending.

McCain's statement that the President and Democrats amassed this deficit is disingenuous. He and others in his party are trying to rewrite history and forget the Republicans' 8-year spending spree under George Bush.
