Earth Day found the City of New Bern, Craven County, the North Carolina Forestry Department, Green Craven, Less Means More and the New Bern Chamber of Commerce coming together to recognize this special day and several businesses that lead the way in terms of being Green.
Union Point Park was the perfect site for this recognition, perfect weather, two rivers and the sounds of nature all combining to make the recognition even more meaningful.
Commissioner Johny Sampson read a proclamation from Craven County recognizing Earth Week and encouraging all residents of Craven County to learn and participate in all things green.
Mayor Lee Bettis focused on the Arbor Day aspect of Earth Day by reminding everyone of the value of trees in our lives and the fine work the City does in maintaining and encouraging trees within the City.
Kevin Roberts, on behalf of the Chamber in cooperation with Green Craven, presented Green Business awards to three businesses, Craven Community College, Ward and Smith and The Epiphany School for their efforts in recycling and other forms of Green Practices.
In order to receive the awards, each business had to show that they were achieving a series of practices and milestones. A detailed list may be found at http://greencraven.org as well as instructions on nominating a business or organization for this award.
Rusty Hayes, on behalf of Less Means More, an organization that focuses on wise water use, presents an award to BSH for good water conservation practices at the corporate level. He also cited several ways in which BSH has assisted in making our area a better place. Chuck Dale with BSH reminded everyone that BSH, a German Company, has been practicing and encouraging Green Living and conservation for many years, in the tradition they brought from Germany.
The North Carolina Forest Service awarded New Bern its 14th Tree City Award, as well as other awards involving the City's committment to trees and green areas. Mayor Bayliss was pleased to receive the awards and assured Mr. Riggs that the flag and other items would be displayed prominently and proudly.
