Four nights of Phish, a Red Rocks review - Part 2

Chris Kuroda, lighting director, displays his lighting prowess.

Continued from Part 1 of the Red Rocks Review…

Night Three – August 1, 2009

Night two really set the bar high for the rest of the weekend and Night 3 didn’t disappoint. After opening with “AC/DC Bag”, the band busted out “The Curtain With” for the first time since Coventry, the last shows before they called it quits in 2004. “The Curtain,” a symbolic choice for their final song in 2004 was a trainwreck to say the least. Finally, nearly 5 years later they redeemed themselves. This “Curtain” was smooth, beautiful and wonderfully played, it was easily one of the highlights of the weekend. Now if they can just nail “Glide…”

Other highlights from the first set include the rare “Mound,” a pleasantly surprising “Gotta Jibboo” and a blistering “Run Like An Antelope.”

Phish came out for the second set by tearing through a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Rock & Roll.” One of the better jams of the weekend followed with “Down With Disease.” Other notable highlights include the first “Esther” since 2000 and the most technically sound “Harry Hood” since the return.

Night Four – August 2, 2009

Fans got down with the brown as Phish opened the final night with “Roses Are Free,” a Ween song that has been apart of their repertoire for over 10 years. “Reba” was the focal point of the first set, with other highlights being “Back On The Train” and what is slowly becoming one of the best new songs, “Kill Devil Falls.”

Fans knew they were going to save something special for the final set of the weekend. About halfway through “You Enjoy Myself” another microphone was brought onstage indicating that a guest appearance was imminent. Fans were delighted when Bill Kreutzmann, drummer for The Grateful Dead, joined them onstage for nearly the entire second set.

Did I mention the “Boogie On Reggae Women” that opened the second set? No? Well I should have because that jam was one of the most exploratory jams of the weekend. A must listen.

 A perfect weekend.

At this point Phish is showing they are not afraid to tackle some of their toughest tunes. They are polished and ready to regain the throne as jamband kings and one of the biggest touring acts in the music industry.
