Twestival, a fundraiser for the Web 2.0 crowd

Today, fun folks who love social networking and philanthropy will come together and participate in Twestival. Not familiar? Well, let's start at the beginning. Twestival derives its name from Twitter, the social networking site which allows users to communicate and connect with other users through short (140 characters) status messages.

Twestival was the brainchild of a group of London users who met in September for drinks and to raise money for a local soup kitchen. The response was beyond their expectations, so they decided to do another version on a larger scale.

In January, they released their idea into the Twitter-verse, and within a week, they'd heard from people willing to organize events in over 100 cities. As of today, there are 200+ cities worldwide, including Chicago, planning to celebrate Twitter and raise funds for Charity: water, a global organization dedicated to building pumps and ensuring that people in developing countries have access to clean water.

Here are the details for tonight's Chicago event...

Where: Catalyst Ranch (656 W. Superior)

When: 6:30-8:30p

Donation: $10, includes beer and wine!

Even if you aren't a Twitter user, you should still come out and support this great cause! Social networking has changed the way we interact with each and with businesses, so it's no surprise that it has affected the way we give. This weekend, I'll post my review of Twestival and discuss other ways that social networking has affected nonprofits and philanthropy!

For my Twitter users: If you're planning on going, I encourage you to live-tweet the event! I don't know if there is an official hashtag yet, but feel free to follow me at twitter.com/thefabgiver!
