This afternoon, Tyrus Thomas of the Chicago Bulls surprised a local family with a makeover of their home. Thomas teamed up with the CARA Program to present the family of Lateefah Allen with the holiday gift. Thomas and CARA redecorated the family’s living room and dining room to equip them with all the essentials needed to bring comfort and warmth to a home. A team of volunteers spent the afternoon updating the rooms with new furniture, paint, wall, floor and window treatments. In addition to the makeover, the family was surprised with a Christmas tree stocked with gifts for Lateefah and her six children ages 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, and 5 years.

Allen recently completed her GED through the CARA Program and was recommended by staff because of her commitment and dedication. The CARA Program is an organization dedicated to assisting individuals affected by homelessness and poverty in transform their lives and achieving real, lasting success. CARA provides comprehensive training, permanent job placement, and critical support services to program participants.

The gifts, which were hand wrapped by Thomas, included clothing, toys, and educational materials. Partners of this event included CharitaBulls, interior designer Jennifer Pitcock, Value City Furniture, Abt Electronics, and Best Buy. This surprise was an act of Thomas' charitable foundation, Tyrus Thomas Inc., which was founded earlier this year to cultivate and improve the Greater Baton Rouge and Chicago communities through the implementation of programs geared towards youth outreach and community development.
