According to mlb.com, the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a deal with utility man Juan Castro, providing he passes the team's physical.

Castro has spent 15 seasons in the big leagues and most recently with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  In his career, Castro has played each position in the infield.  Castro has also played in the outfield, but on the Phillies he will be used as a utility infielder.

Castro will take over for Eric Bruntlett, who the Phillies used as a utility man the past two seasons.  Castro provides a decent option, if Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley or the starting third basemen find the disabled list.

Last year, Castro played sparingly for the Dodgers because of the team's depth in the infield.   In 112 at-at bats, Castro hit .277 with one homerun.  Like Bruntlett, Castro is not a great hitter, but he is a solid replacement player with an above average glove.

Yes, this isn't a very exciting signing, mainly do to the fact that Castro is only a utility player. Not many people can say they were thrilled when the Phillies brought in Bruntlett either. If any of the infielders gets hurt long term the team will suffer no matter who the replacement may be. Hopefully Castro can be a solid replacement like Bruntlett.
As for the beard, somethings just cannot be replaced.
