So defensive end Jason Babin makes the team. That’s clear, seeing as the Eagles reworked his contract Friday.
Babin, a first-round draft pick of the Texans in 2004 whom the Eagles signed off the street in early August, led the team with three sacks in the preseason. But if he makes it, some other defensive lineman will not. Somebody who might have been expected to survive the cutdown to 53, which must come by 6 p.m. tonight.
The best guess is that Bryan Smith, a third-round draft choice in 2008 who did not play a down as a rookie, will be jettisoned. The Eagles supposedly had high hopes for Smith, believing that he could perhaps build up his slight frame – he’s listed at 250 pounds – and become a Trent Cole clone.
It would be unusual for them to pull the plug on a high draft pick so quickly, though.
Is it not possible that Juqua Parker, a starter the last 23 games at left end, might be in trouble? Just a thought, seeing as Babin and Victor Abiamiri would seem capable of manning his spot. And the fact that Parker has been prone to fast starts and late-season fades since he arrived in Philadelphia.
There was also that arrest on a marijuana charge back in training camp. But we all know that would never be a factor, since the Eagles are so big on second chances, right?
