Michigan has a cat problem like every other state. Cats out number dogs 3 to 1 in shelters; and while kittens get adopted r
elatively fast older cats don't. And in the case of cats-that just means 12 months and older. The sad thing is that these cats make wonderful pets. They tend to be more docile, and make a great pet for anyone that doesn't want a rampaging kitten running around. Kittens are fun, but can be a handful.
Michigan decided if the pre-owned car campaigns were a success, maybe they just needed to change their strategy. They came up with an adorable ad campaign that is proving to be a success.
The result, pre-owned, certified cats that can be adopted for little or no cost. They come with "multi-point" inspections, all vaccinations, grooming, and they are spayed or neutered. All you add is love. Many shelters have been worried that if a person doesn't pay for a pet they may not appreciate the pet as much as if they paid an adoption fee. Since shelters do the same background and application process regardless of the cost, or in this case no-cost, this hasn't proven to be true. Good homes are out there, people just need incentive. The economy has really affected shelters nationwide, with pets being given up daily. Most of these pets are older pets. The challenge is to get the word out about what good pets older animals make.
The campaign seems to be working in Michigan. I know that several agencies around the midwest have tried the low cost adoption strategies. To those shelters that have an abundance of felines, I think it is certainly worth a try. It is truly sad to walk through the shelters and see rooms full of cats that only need a lap and some love.
If you can give a loving and safe home to a cat, or better yet two cats, please check out your local shelters. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks for reading and adopting! I appreciate both. keepsake16@yahoo.com I will be happy to post special adoption events.

It's important to spay / neuter our cats to control cat overpopulation.
