2 bills signed yesterday in Illinois that will impact pets. Also events: Spfld, IL & St. Louis

Illinois became the 14th state to require manufacturers to put bitter flavor in anti-freeze and engine coolant when Governor Quinn signed House Bill 4722 yesterday. Every year nearly 100,000 animals and several thousand children are poisoned, many fatally, after ingesting the sweet tasting substance. The substance is sometimes spilled on the driveway or left in open containers, and unfortunately also used intentionally by some heartless people to rid themselves of what they consider a “nuisance” animal.

Jordan Matyas, Illinois director for the Humane Society, says the bitter flavor works 100 percent. It's so bitter that if you do ingest it, you'll spit it right back up. Ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in almost all major antifreeze brands, has an inviting aroma, a sweet flavor. Its appealing smell and taste often tempt animals and children to drink the highly poisonous substance.

To the best of my knowledge Missouri has no such legislation in effect or pending at this time.

Governor Quinn also signed House Bill 4801 which prohibits the ownership of primates as pets. It takes affect Jan 1, 2011 and there are 22 states that have similar laws. Any primates kept now as pets can stay, but they have to be registered with animal control.

The law requiring the bitter flavor to be added to antifreeze takes effect July 1, 2011.  Thanks for reading!  keepsake16@yahoo.com
