Tybee Beach and the dogs: will they be allowed?

CC-by-SA-2.0 ~ Uber Phot  "Dog looking at people on the beach"

Tybee Beach has set a municipal code stating that dogs cannot be on the beach. Tybee Code Chapter 12 Section 12-1 (a) (4) states” ..Unlawful for person….to allow or take that dog or other pet upon the beaches….” This code is strictly enforced but some of the residents seem to have a different feeling. They are dog owners and would like the opportunity to take their dogs on the beach and walk them. There are places on Hilton Head that do allow it and also down in Brunswick that do allow dogs on the beach. They are restricted to certain times and certain days of the year but it seems to be working and a win-win situation for all parties involved.

One resident, Bill Gillespie, of Tybee Beach has formed a group called “Dogs on the Beach” on FaceBook  and also has his own blog online about it too. Here is has gained the popularity of the residents to get the request before the Tybee Island City Council. It actually was discussed during the city council meeting January 28, 2010. Lori Spinks was the speaker about allowing dogs on the beach. During this meeting the councilmen listened and actually said they have had pretty much head to head feedback from both the opponents and the supporters for this. The councilmen have encouraged the group to create guidelines for proposing dogs on the beach, like times and dates that the dogs would be allowed on the beach and as to where on the beach they would be permitted.

The group displays great satisfaction for this request as it is a great improvement than to be just shut down and told no. Bill Gillespie has a petition for interested residents to sign supporting the dogs on the Tybee beach. If you would like more information please email Bill at William.Gillespie@us.army.mil . He can send you the word document for you to print, sign and mail for supporting this cause. He also has an online poll asking people what they think about dogs on the beach and as of 1/29/10 it had 145 voters with a 98% stating yes for this change.

It is same that dog owners continue to treated as second class citzens when it come to parks and recreational areas. While some pet owners creaqte problems by allowing their dogs off leash or failing to clean up after them, in most places there are laws to deal with both of these transgressions and they should be enforced. This would allow those that do care for and about the community to continue to enjoy the beaches. Dog owners pay taxes and should have the same access as everyone else. I for one will not vacation on Hilton Head again until this ban is reversed.

Thanks Tammy for the compliment. I was just trying to let everyone know that subscribes to my Savannah page and likes to be updated on the puppy mills and dog fighting issues to look at the othjer page and subscribe there.
As for Tybee Beach, yes I agree. There should be laws for the pet owners as to when, where, leashed and pick-up duties. All this should be enforced by stiff fines to make sure pet owners stay responsible to these laws. I have see one time too many in Florida where these rules were made but not enforced and it ruined the beaches.
