Rocky was the victim of the economy. His owners had to move from their home but instead of taking the poor boxer-mix with them, they left him chained up in the back yard. He was left with no food or water or shelter. Savannah Chatham Metro Animal Control picked him up and took him to their shelter. This is a shelter with a high-kill rate. They just do not have the facility or the resources to adopt all of them out. Rocky was at the end of the line until Dana Williams, of Iron Underdawgs, came along and started to rally for Rocky to get him out of the shelter.

Dana lived in Savannah for 7 years while going to SCAD. She loved it in Savannah and animals became a part of her life. She adopted 3 dogs from Second Chance Dog Rescue in Savannah, but later moved to Muncie, Indiana. There she and three others, including her husband, formed Iron Underdawgs to help out pit bull and bully breed type dogs that don’t get the chance they so deserve. She was even more determined to help Rocky since he was a Boxer (some say that is a bully breed). She found Minnesota Boxer Rescue that would help to get him out of Animal Control if he was in fact a true purebred Boxer. Since he did not look to be true after looking at his pictures they did help to get him out but redirected Dana to RePets in Bowling Green Kentucky that would take him with no problem. The Iron Underdawgs paid for the boarding fees to the Southside Animal Clinic until Rocky could be transported.

Now came the hardest part the transportation. Dana Williams got withPilots-n-Paws to help coordinate pilots to help transport Rocky. James Kleen, of Savannah, picked up Rocky from the veterinary office of Southside Animal Clinic on Abercorn. There he received treatments on last Wednesday night for going into heart failure due to testing positive for heartworms and being severely malnourished. Dr. Karen Kane was taking care of him until James could get him Friday night. James got him and got prepared for the flight Saturday morning. Rocky did very well staying over night with James but seemed to have a mind of his own. He did love the attention he was getting though. Rocky and James flew out about 9:00am and got into Asheville, NC about 10:30am or so. There he met up with veterinarian Dr. David Crouch that then flew Rocky to Bowling Green, KY. They got in about 1:00pm or so that afternoon.

Tracy Moser, of RePets, was there along with two colleagues to greet Rocky upon his arrival. They were taken back by his condition but with a little love, care and food he appeared that he would bounce back to a great recovery. He will have to undergo heartworm treatments, get eating some healthy food, and get plenty of rest for the next few weeks before he can get adopted out. Rocky was someone’s pet before, but hopefully now he will be someone’s family member. Rocky knew the outside of a home, but now he will only know the inside of being at home. All of this was possible from a lot of caring people that love animals and want the very best for them.
