"Pet Pages" photo contest #31 winners

Daisy is at the Savannah CHatham Metro Animal Control

“Savannah Rescue Spotlight” is a rescue dog or cat from a local shelter that is in need of adoption. The featured rescue is as follows:

Daisy is at the Savannah Chatham Metro Animal Control. She was brought in recently and as you know this facility is a high-kill facility. There is just not enough room for them all, so we need to do our part to spread the word and get Daisy out of there. She is a young and super friendly shepherd mix who was left outside a local store in Savannah, GA. She can be adopted through Pound Puppies, which works out of the Animal Control,  by contacting Michelle at 912-401-2991 or 912-434-1448 for more information. Pet lovers can even send an email to
poundpups2009@yahoo.com . Daisy is on DEATH-ROW and will only be available for about one week or so, if you are interested please make that call to let them know. If not, her soul will be in the hands of her creator. Spread the word!

Photo by~B. Waites "Now being a new mom sure makes me tired"

We have the winners to the “Pet Pages” photo contest #31. Congratulations to each and every one of you. Here is what we all have been waiting for, the results.

1st Place – “Now being a new mom sure makes me tired” This picture was sent in by B. Waites. This is what she had to say about the picture, “Drea is a gorgeous 5 year old Leonberger. She has blessed us with 2 beautiful litters of puppies. Drea could be a poster child for the Leonberger breed. True to their standard, her temperament is very calm, loving, loyal, and eager to please. The Leonberger as we know it, came about back in 1846 when Hienrich Essing crossed a Landseer Newfoundland (white with black), St Bernard, and Great Pyrenees. Drea is highly intelligent. She has web feet which makes her a great swimmer which is good because she loves the water. We are very fortunate to be owned & loved by Drea and the rest of the Leos that share their lives with us. The motto in our lives is: Everyone should be loved by a Leo!”
Thanks for sending such a great shot. I just love yourwebsite showing off your babies. This photo won 52% of the votes.

Photo by~F. Mallon                  "I have such a face of innocense"

2nd Place – “I have such a face of innocence.” This picture was sent in by F. Mallon. This is what she had to say about the picture, “Bonacres Quaker’s Zane Gold CGC, TDI, “Zane”, December 31, 1997-August 13, 2009 Zane was a wonderful dog, with the perfect golden retriever personality and my constant companion. He would follow me everywhere and traveled with me on vacations, dog shows, and weddings all over the country. I trusted him in all situations, I never once heard him growl. Even when other dogs would growl at him and bear teeth, he did not react. When my golden Galligan died in 1999 of lymphoma, Zane licked Galligan’s collar and tags for 30 minutes when I returned from the hospital without his pal. He loved to be a teaching dog in the Veterinary Technology program at Camden County College. All I would have to say is, “Do you want to go to school?” He would immediately start to dance (spin in circles), he loved the students and was wonderful with them, so patient. Zane was with me through my Mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis and her death, the death of my Father 6 years later to pulmonary fibrosis, and then a year later the death of my leonberger McCabe. Zane was also a therapy dog and visited many nursing homes, hospitals, schools, and would dance for everyone’s delight. Zane too was diagnosed with lymphoma (just as his pal Galligan had been 10 years prior) in March 2009. He underwent chemotherapy every week for 6 months and never once complained. He did well until the last few weeks, and then I had to say “goodbye” to my faithful companion. I am sure my parents are caring for him now. I miss him terribly each day. The wonderful picture of Zane’s beautiful and gentle face was taken by Cal Sampson of Still Motion Photography in Cape May Court House, NJ. I treasure his gentle face in this picture always.”
Thanks for sending such a beautiful photo. Zane’s face has such gentleness about it like he could calm you no matter what type of day you had. This photo came in with 30% of the votes.

Photo by!K. Duffy "Hey human, come back here I'll get your leash just you wait"

3rd Place – “Hey human, come back here I’ll get your leash just you wait!” This picture was sent in by K. Duffy. This is what she had to say about the picture, “My foster dog Bill was one of the worst disasters our rescue group had seen - a puppy mill breeder for two years, put out to auction, and left with terrible emotional scars. He was so scared of people that he managed to get out of my yard and hide in the woods for THREE WEEKS! When he was found, he was emaciated and even more terrified, with a wound so deep we could see muscle. The shelter wasn’t sure if it would be more humane to put him out of his misery or to let me try and rehabilitate him, but luckily they choose the latter. For a month we went to the vet every day to change his bandages, and for three months he was too scared to move. Of course, we adopted him, and I promised him at least two hours of fun outdoor activities every day to make up for the two years he spent in the puppy mill. After a year he’s almost a “whole” dog. He still has his quirks, like “begging” to him is sitting on my foot and facing away from me! We hike, visit the dog park, swim, and drive around together (he loves the car). He also loves other dogs, so we get him his own foster dogs from MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue as often as possible. Sometimes he teaches them, and other times they teach him. Either way it’s always a good experience. I didn’t own a dog before we adopted Bill, nor did I know much about puppy mills and how many dogs were in need of desperate help. My eyes are now open, and I want to do more. Recently, I gave Bill his own book company. Happy Tails Books compiles breed-specific and region-specific books full of stories submitted by people with adopted dogs. The books raise awareness of, and donations for dog rescue. Bill’s full story is on the website, as is more information about Happy Tails. I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to guide Bill through his rehabilitation. He’s my best friend and playmate, and I couldn’t imagine life without him now.”
Thanks for sending in such a cute photo. It’s cute to see the roles reversed. This photo came in with 12% of the votes.
