In Savannah everyone know the humane society as the Humane Society Savannah/Chatham but in reality their services go way beyond there. Not only that with their current name some people are under the assumption that the city or county are helping to fund their services. They do not. The Humane Society Savannah/Chatham is undergoing a name change that will be effective soon. They are going to be the Humane Society for Greater Savannah. This will help people understand they are here to help not only Savannah but the surrounding areas as well as help to make people understand they are not a part of the county or city.
The Humane Society for Greater Savannah is a private non-profit organization that relies solely on private and corporate donations. They also do special fundraising events that bring in donations for the organization. They do not receive any funding from any national humane associations or from the government. They are hoping by taking out “Chatham” they will alleviate the problem of people thinking they are a part of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Animal Control, which is directly behind them. They are not a part of the Animal Control but they do work closely with them. The Animal Control does receive tax-payer dollars to their organization from city funding as where the Humane Society for Greater Savannah only receives special funding from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). This funding is for non-profits in the Savannah area and is for "capital improvements".
With this change, the Humane Society for Greater Savannah is now implementing a new mission statement. “The mission of the Humane Society for Greater Savannah is to lead our community in the compassionate treatment of animals, to address the cause of animal suffering and overpopulation, to educate and encourage people to take responsibility for their animal companions and to provide care for animals in need.”
