At the 7th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences, Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) presented Dr. Thomas Hartung the 2009 Russel & Burch Award. This award is for helping the progression of developing and the implementation of the use of non-animal methods in toxicity testing. Basically, Dr. Hartung is helping provide ways to test products for people without the use of animals or to provide minimal pain and discomfort when conducting animal testing. DR. Hartung has just recently come into two new positions at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. He also is an honorary professor at the University of Konstanz in Germany.
“Thomas Hartung is recognized as the world’s foremost authority on alternative methods of toxicity testing,” said Martin Stephens, Ph.D., The HSUS’ vice president for animal research issues. Quote from September 3rd, 2009 HSUS press release.
This award shows the accomplishment of utilizing one or more of the three R’s that were created by William Russel and Rex Burch in 1959. The three R’s are Replacing or Reducing animal use all together in experiments and the Refining methods so animals do not experience an extreme amount of pain or discomfort. The award is a trophy, a $5,000 prize and a copy of the 50th anniversary of the publication “The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique”. This book details the Three R’s approach that they are commending in people.
