Los Angeles Greyhound owners, lovers of the Greyhound breed and for that matter any sight hound lover, you might want to take a trip up to Solvang for Greyhound Fest from February 24 - 26. Greyhounds take over the town of Solvang during this weekend festival celebrating these hounds.
Solvang is a very dog-friendly town with lots of places where your dog can accompany you whether it is shopping, wine tasting or dining at one of the many restaurants that have outdoor patios. Just image the elegant and graceful Greyhound strolling down the quaint charming streets of Solvang. It will definitely be a sight to see.
One of the highlights of the weekend is the Solvang Streak held on Saturday February 25th at The Upper Solvang Elementary School. As you know Greyhounds and all sight hounds love to run. This fun run allows the hounds to run free in a cordoned off area, while showing us how fast they can run. An off duty Solvang police officer officially clocks each hound’s speed with a radar gun. There are prizes including those for the fastest and slowest. Some hounds will trot or walk, while others will go all out and run like the wind down the straightaway. Of course there are those that bring the comic relief by not doing anything and looking at you saying you want me to do what? That is what makes this event so much fun.
The Blessing of the Hounds at Santa Ines Mission is one of the opening day events. Here FR Gerald Barron, OFM Cap blesses the hounds on the Mission grounds.
Solvang’s Veteran’s Memorial Hall becomes the place to shop for everything Greyhound. There will be special speakers, a Greyhound Nose Work Demo, Silent Auction and many more festivities.
The proceeds raised from the Solvang Greyhound Fest will benefit Greyt Legs, a 501-c3 non-profit support group that aids various adoption groups with grants that assist Greyhounds with broken-let veterinarian bills.
