Can this happen in Hawaii to our dogs and cats? Is H1N1 a return to the days of the Renaissance and the plagues that killed millions of people? Even with all our modern technology we may not be able to control this virus. The best advice is to be prepared for what may come your way. Hopefully you will not be touched by H1N1 but hiding your head in the sand and believing this only happens elsewhere is possibly a foolish notion.
No one thought pets would catch this virus, but now there are confirmed cases in the mainland US. Over the next few days I will give you tips on how to be prepared for this epidemic which is a real and happening around us.
We are all told to wash our hands to stop the spread of the H1N1 virus. If someone pets your dog and has H1N1 virus on their hands you are at risk and so are your pet and your family. My advice is to wipe your dog down after an outing to a public place. You can use antibacterial wipes. The nature of people is to want to pet your cute dog. However due to the nature of the H1N1 virus, people must change the way we treat our pets and their safety.
When some pet owners come home from the park or outdoor places they usually kiss their dog on the head or other places where another person may have transmitted the H1N1 from their hands. Pet owners can potentially put themselves at risk. From now on I recommend you carry antibacterial wipes along with your pooper scooper bags.
Tomorrow I will share some tips about how to prepare your home for your pet in these uncertain times. Being prepared for any emergency is a way to calm those fears.
Several of the cats that had the H1N1 virus in Utah, Oregon and Iowa survived. This virus is random and can be prevented if we follow certain guidelines.

whi would have thaought that animals can get the flu virus. very interesting to know. Angie
I totally agree with your point about carrying antibacterial wipes whenever walking your dog; In fact bring an antibacterial hand wash with me that dries instantly on your hands when I take my two Greyhounds for a walk. I also use a dog walking bag (www.dickybag.com) when I have to pick their stools so I dont have to carry them needlessly around before I get to a trash bin.
