Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha, WI, will be closing at the end of 2009. The closing will put nearly 200 people out of work. It will also leave hundreds of greyhounds in need of loving homes.
According to the Dairyland website, "Wisconsin State law provides that the greyhounds are to be adopted to new homes, sent to another racetrack for racing purposes or returned to their owners. Our kennel compound will remain open until all greyhounds are properly placed." For more information on the track closure, see Dairyland article.
Greyhound adoption groups around the country are stepping up to help find loving homes for the Dairyland dogs.
Here in southwestern Ohio, Greyhound Adoption of Greater Cincinnati (GAGC) is making contact with the track to accept a few dogs and place them in foster homes. GAGC has an excellent foster home placement system that provides loving care for the dogs until "forever" adoptive homes can be located.
Virgil Sweeden has adopted four greyhounds over the years, including two from GAGC. "Greyhounds are consummate couch potatoes. They're usually not the high-energy dogs that people think they are. They're graceful, playful, sweet, and fun. It's so easy to open your heart to one of these wonderful dogs."
If you are interested in fostering or adopting a greyhound, whether from Dairyland or from another track, contact GAGC at 513-624-7040 or visit their website.
