On the scene at the C.A.R.E. 2010 Strut for Strays

Saturday, May 8, was a rainy, blustery day with temperatures in the low 40s, but the poor weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of more than 100 animal lovers who assembled at Evanston’s Ladd Arboretum.

These hardy souls came to participate or support the C.A.R.E. 2010 Strut for Strays. Most walkers arrived prepared for the weather…including many of the pooches sporting sweaters, coats and blankets.

According to Megan, a volunteer who handles publicity for the group, about 175 people pre-registered for the walkathon.

Julia Weertman is a dentist by day and a volunteer with Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy in her spare time. She accompanied therapy dogs Kate and Nellie to the event. In addition to supporting a great fund-raising event, Julia showed up to recruit people and their friendly dogs for the animal assisted therapy program. Details are available at: www.rainbowaat.org.

Grayson the greyhound was shivering despite his warming blanket. His human companion Carrie noted that Grayson was adopted from one of the greyhound rescue groups.

The Community Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.) is an all-volunteer organization that works in conjunction with Evanston's municipal Animal Shelter to find homes for the unwanted and abandoned animals that are brought to the shelter.
