The Hingham Fire Department is receiving an award from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for the recent rescue of a dog who fell into icy waters of Hingham Harbor on February 6, 2009.
The Hingham Fire Department is receiving PETA's Compassionate Fire Department Award.
Two-year-old Olly the black Labrador Retriever was chasing birds when he ventured out onto the thin ice of Hingham Harbor and fell into the frigid waters as his horrified caretaker looked on. Three Hingham firefighters rescued the dog, donning cold water rescue suits and risking their own lives to save Olly.
PETA will present the Hingham Fire Chief with a framed certificate and note of thanks, along with PETA mugs and some vegan hot chocolate for the firefighters who worked to rescue Olly the Black Lab after he fell through the ice.
In a statement, PETA vice president Daphna Nachminovitch said, "This rescue operation was an absolute demonstration of heroics on the part of these valiant firefighters whose know-how and dedication saved the day...Hingham is extremely lucky to have first responders who are ready to protect and serve local citizens and their beloved four-legged companions."
