Callie masterfully sits up for a Kitty Kavair treat.
Yes, cats can master tricks – you just need to make them think it is their idea. Selecting mini-training sessions around meal times and using high-quality, nutritious treats also help.
So, move over, Fido. Cats are quite capable of shaking paws, walking on leashes and even coming when called. My cat, Callie charms house guests by performing “sit up” on cue. Here is how to train your cat to perform this fun trick.
When your cat is in a calm, peaceful state and is sitting down, approach him quietly. Show her one of her favorite treats to entice her interest.
Hold a treat an inch or so over your cat’s head and say, “sit up.”
If your cat tries to swat at it or stand sup, don’t give him the treat. Instead, repeat the “sit up” command and he will soon get the idea that he needs to stand up and balance his weight on his two hind feet to earn this tasty reward.
The second your cat sits up, give him the treat and deliver praise.
Practice a few minutes each day – cats are not big on long training sessions. Vary the locations. My cat, Callie will now sit up on cue on the stairs, jump up on a chair and hoist her body up because she knows the tasty payoff – Kitty Kavair (shaved bonito fish). Great taste and very little calories.
