The gardenia, having originated in the asian countries of China and Japan, where it is know by its chinese name Zhi Zi, belongs to the family rubiaceae.  We tend to use it in the culinary arena and for decoration more so than for its healing powers, which are plentiful.

Its culinary uses include that of food coloring and tea.

The gardenia can be found decorating gardens, not only with its beauty but also with its aroma.  It can be found in simple and decodant flower arrangements and one can also find it posing as a houseplant from time to time.

In the healing arena, the gardenia holds powers far greater than anything you might expect.  It can cool the blood, reduce swelling, calm irritability, stop bleeding, treat muscle, joint, and tendon injuries, treat anxiety, treat infections, treat insomnia, treat headaches and treat dizziness.

The fruit is used in antifungal, astrigent, and stomache tonics.

Internally, the gardenia plant is used for delerium, abcesses, bloody urine, fevers, headaches, hepatitis, jaundice, irritablity, emotional blockages, hypertension, insomnia, nose bleeds, restlessness, ulcers, etc.  For these ailments, capsules and teas are available.

Topically, the gardenia is used on abcesses, bruises, sprains, and on swelling.

The essential oil of the gardenia is know to calm the heart.  It is often used  to aid in seperation anxiety in animals and for shelter pets of for animals that have experienced a trauma such as a fire, the loss of their human, those left behind in Katrina, etc.  In animals, the gardenia is also used on and for snakebites.
