In a recent attempt to shed light on the suffering of chickens raised for slaughter, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) requested that Virgina Governor Tim Kaine allow the group to rent a building at a state prison as a sanctuary for the birds saved from slaughter.
The building is not currently in use and would possibly be marked for demolition. A representative for Governor Kaine stated in reports by the Associated Press that "the state doesn't lease to private entities except for cases grandfathered in when it purchases buildings."
PETA wants to use the prison to set the tone for a chicken "museum" that shows the lives and attributes of the birds as intelligent creatures.
