Two pugs are now up for adoption, both with an unusual story of abandonment. It appears that the dogs' owners both decided to end their own lives, leaving the pugs to fend for themselves for a number of days before the bodies were discovered. With no one to feed them, reports say that "their instincts kicked in." And they ate the only thing in the house that they could. But not because they wanted to.

"They have no food aggression. They have no aggression toward people. They don't have aggression toward other dogs. They don't have any affiliation issues," said Pam Wiese of the Humane Society. "We gave them the same behavior tests we give any dog. We didn't give them any special treatment due to the circumstances they were in."

Unlike the threat of repeat attacks after a dog has killed livestock, behavior evaluators from the Nebraska Humane Society say the two dogs aren't a threat to people. It was simply a sad, sad situation.

If you find an abandoned dog, you can always contact local authorities at Dallas Animal Services.

That's disgusting! This isn't really a good way to help promote adoption.

It's guesome, but it's a story of abandonment. And the dogs hopefully will be in better hands with new owners who won't leave them without care.

Probably would be better if it was clear this is the Nebraska Humane Society and this took place in Papillion, Nebraska - not in Dallas.

@Dog Lover - these are carnivores. When left to fend for themselves after their owners selfishly killed themselves without at least opening the door first - what would you expect them to do?! Let us nor forget the story of the soccer tean that crashed in the mountains and ate their own dead...

I think it's a good article. You haven't seen the other headlines carrying this story: "Would you adopt man-eating pugs" was one!!

People in the same situation will and have done the same thing. I'm glad they will be adopted out. Poor puggies.

Would it be too insensitive to say that this sounds like poetic justice? And they look so well fed too.

This story addresses natural survival. The humans failed to provide so nature did. It is akin to stories of dog "attacks" or bites. It is in their nature. It is the responsibility of owners to understand and train the dogs properly. Common sense says to take their natural instincts that we dislike and turn it into an acceptable form of conduct. It is the same with having children. Then don't train themselves to the best social conduct. If you want to be responsible (own) an animal learn about it, it's nature, and choose wisely.

If you want to know more about intelligent interaction with dogs, especially German Shepherds, I suggest Examiner dot com writer John Lee-Thiem.
