Reports are coming in with news on a suicide mission that devastated a community in Baghdad this week. The city literally crumpled in seconds after a car bomb exploded in the streets. But amazingly, a medium sized brown dog that was chained to a roof railing was the sole survivor of his household. And as the dust cleared, he could be seen high above the city, looking down atop a single wall.

Rescue workers swiftly moved in searching for people who might be trapped Tuesday. They watched the dog high atop his perch, but could do little to save him with so much rubble strewn around the wall where he sat. Neighbors made statements to the Associated Press that the family had all died in the explosion and had already been pulled out of what used to be the house.

At the last count, 125 were killed and 500 were wounded in the attack.

As for the dog, no one knows what will become of him. Officials said that if no one came forward to claim the dog, there is no telling what might happen. Dogs often roam the streets since Iraquis don't commonly own animals. And in a country with no government-funded animal care assistance, he may or may not survive without his family.

*Update*

A report has just surfaced from the Associated Press that a 14-year-old boy has come forward to claim the dog, named Liza, who survived the blast. Somehow, the boy was not in the home during the explosion and came back. Watch the slideshow below as two men help the boy get the dog down to safety.

Liza was purchased at a market 6 years ago. But now, she is almost all he has. Both the boy and his faithful dog are lucky to be alive, and to be reunited.
