Washington County, Georgia - Derrick Montez Daniels and Billy Taylor Jr. were convicted of 26 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty Wednesday. Last February 17, 2010 the United Animal Nation, Sumter DART, (Disaster Animal Response Team) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals worked together to seize 26 emaciated and chained dogs from a 25 acre property near Sandersville, Georgia.
Daniels and Taylor were suspected of using the dogs to fight. There were another 27 dogs found dead in various stages of decomposition. The dogs still alive were emaciated, without water or shelter, and chained to tires, axles, and posts.
Tim Rickey, senior director of the ASPCA Field Investigation and Response team stated;
"The dogs were not only starved of food and affection, but used to breed and fight each other to the death. I'm glad justice is being served."
Daniels was sentenced to five years in the state prison and five years of probation. Taylor was sentenced to one year in the county jail and nine years probation. The trial lasted for three days. Animal supporters were pleased that the defendants were held accountable for the pain and suffering of the animals.
The dogs were treated for open wounds, respiratory problems, dehydration and starvation, and later evaluated by ASPCA animal behavior specialists.
