St.Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa in support of Missouri Prop B

Tony LaRussa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals and co-founder of the Animal Rescue Foundation has been appearing in commercials supporting Missourians for the Protection of Dogs/Yes! on Proposition B.

Proposition B is supported by Missouri veterinarians, animal welfare organizations, politicians, and responsible dog breeders and is aimed at large scale dog breeders in the state. If passed, the legislation will provide dogs with enough food, clean water, proper housing and room to move, veterinarian care, regular exercise, and breeding cycles restricted to two times every 18 months. Breeders will also be limited to 50 breeding dogs for pet sales, and "puppy mill cruelty" will become a misdemeanor crime.

"Thousands of dogs are crammed into small and filthy cages at these large scale puppy mills. No responsible pet owner would ever treat an animal like that. It's cruelty, it's inhumane, and we need to change it," states La Russa.

Opposition to Proposition B claims it will adversely affect responsible breeders who already follow the rules, and it would increase the price of dog ownership.

Two of the state's largest puppy mills will be closing and auctioning off 800 dogs at the end of this month on October 29 and October 30. Herman and Bonnie Schindler's Teachers Pets and Conrad's Cuddly Canines, of which Conrad's business appears on the "dirty dozen" list assembled by the Humane Society based on USDA inspection reports are  reportedly closing because of health issues.

Something Special Castaways Rescue, run by Carolyn Hadley is raising funds, coordinating foster care, working on rehabilitation facilities, and organizing breed specific rescue organizations to be in attendance at the auction. Animals can sell from practically nothing to thousands of dollars for well-bred young females. The dogs are likely to be unsocialized, not housebroken, and terrified. The supporting animal welfare groups hope to save these dogs from being sold to other high volume breeders.

All organizations capable of helping are asked to join in this huge effort to save these dogs. There are many ways to help:

  • Contact breed specific rescues
  • If interested in a dog, contact Something Special Castaways Rescue
  • Donate
  • Become a foster home
  • Attend the auction

Vote Yes on Prop B --- a clear message against greedy, selfish, immoral breeders who lack consciences. Don't breed or buy while millions die. Adopt, spay/neuter! The animals are counting on us to do the right thing.

Vote NO on Prop B...the only reason HSUS wants this passed is because they are trying to eliminate ALL DOMESTIC ANIMALS!!! From the President of HSUS Wayne Pacelle himself, I quote, "We have no problem with the extinction of all domestic animals." and "I never want to see another cat or dog born." Gee does this sound like a person that really gives a crap about animals??? I think not!
