Robert Shields of Poway, CA was a truck driver who was hauling a load through Nebraska earlier this month, with his four-legged partner Zak when they were in a terrible accident. The crash on Interstate 80 killed Shields and left his one-year-old Besenji pal stranded.
That’s when the Nebraska Humane Society stepped in to help the little dog get back home. Zak’s family in California told Pam Wiese, who is a spokesperson for the rescue group that they could not afford to fly the dog home so she put out a plea asking for funds.
Weise reported that the office phones began “ringing off the hook” with more than 100 people calling to offer their help
“Some people even offered to pay the whole tab for Zak’s ride home,” said Weise.
At first the organization considered asking another trucker to give Zak a lift home, but worried about sending the dog on a long trip with a stranger. Then the donations began pouring into the Humane Society office. They added up to more than $500.
Zak was not seriously hurt in the crash, although he has a big scratch on his head. He had been traveling with Shields around the country since he was eight weeks old. His family was at the airport to welcome him home.
"We're so thankful to everybody,"family member Jamie Pickett said. "We got a little bit of happiness out of this sad time in our life."
