Operation Blankets of Love (OBOL), the Granada Hills-based nonprofit organization providing comfort supplies to animal shelters and rescue groups, has been selected to receive 10,419 lbs. of Hill’s Science Diet food for pets in need.
The shipment, which will consist of both dry and canned dog food and canned cat food, will be dispensed by OBOL on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (and Sunday if the supply lasts) at the new Best Friends Animal Adoption Center in Mission Hills, 15321 S. Brand Blvd.
Ron Matsuda, manager of the Santa Monica PETCO, one of OBOL’s many drop-off locations, nominated OBOL to be the recipient due to their ongoing partnership and his support of their work in animal welfare, advocacy and shelter reform.
Matsuda's store collected the most pet food in its region during a recent Hill’s Pet Nutrition-sponsored food drive, which Hill's matched in food donations to Operation Blankets of Love and others.
“The quantities we apportion will be based on need, but we want to spread it around and make sure there’s enough for everyone,” said Brad Smulson, OBOL Co-Founder and Vice President. Smulson also adds that it’s first-come, first-served, and interested rescue groups and shelters should call him in advance to make arrangements, as well as bring along some type of documentation showing their 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
Additionally, Operation Blankets of Love, known as the “Red Cross to the Animal Rescue World,” will continue to supply the Best Friends Adoption Center with blankets, towels, food and crates for animals housed at their facility, as well as those they transport to other parts of the country to be adopted into new homes.
Best Friends Animal Society will partner with Los Angeles Animal Services to hold monthly pet adoptions of dogs, cats and bunnies from L.A.A.S. city shelters at this facility, which formerly served as an emergency evacuation and temporary holding center that was closed to the public.
Added Smulson: “We’re very grateful to PETCO, Hill’s, and of course Best Friends Adoption Center Manager Mike Harmon for facilitating this wonderful endeavor to help out needy animals in shelters and rescue organizations.”
