Right now, the DC Area Weimaraner Rescue has 30 playful Weimeraner and Weimeraner-mixes ranging from 5 months to 12 years old awaiting loving homes. This non-profit organization is devoted to rescuing and rehoming unwanted Weimaraners and serves Washington DC, Maryland, Virgina and West Virginia.
Meet the breed
The Weimaraner is a large, short-coated, silver-gray dog with boundless energy. Bred for hunting in the field, they are intelligent and have the stamina to keep going all day long. When not working, they want to be part of the family and to be included in everything you do. A playful and energetic family pet, Weimeraners are good with children but may unintentionally knock over tiny tots during bursts of excitement.
While these sleek gray beauties require little more than brushing to keep them looking great, their other needs require a significant investment of time. Weimeraners need lots of attention and daily vigorous exercise, such as Frisbee, jogging or off-lead romping in a large, fenced yard or dog park.
Weimeraners can be quite strong willed and require owners who will commit to regular training to keep them in line. Being large (up to 85 pounds for males) and a bit bossy, this intelligent dog will take over your house if you let it. But, if you can set firm boundaries and say no like you mean it, the Weimeraner will accept your leadership and become the best canine companion you’ve ever had.
