These days more and more people are taking out pet insurance for their pets.

The Associated Press in conjunction with Petside.com conducted a survey in which it was found that over 40% of pet owners stated they were concerned that they would not be able to pay veterinary bills should their cat or dog become sick or injured.

Because of this, many pet owners in Salt Lake City have taken out pet insurance policies for their pets, including Carl Arky, the spokesman for the Humane Society of Utah:

"I have it for catastrophic reasons. I have mixed feelings about it. It comes down to if you can afford it."

Arky told the Deseret News that he spends roughly $30 per month for insurance for his two dogs.

The Utah Insurance Department has seen an increase in the amount of pet-only insurance policies across the state.

And as such, wish to advise people that the insurance policy they ultimately chose for their pet will be based upon their pet's species, breed, age and even their pet's expected length of life.
 

The Utah Insurance Department also wants pet owners to realize that their pet is covered automatically under their automobile insurance policy in the event of their pet being injured in a car accident.

Since most pet insurance companies force their policy holders to use a specific network of veterinarians, Utah state officials are encouraging prospective policy holder to "shop around" and to be careful to avoid fraud.
