A ten-month old baby girl in LaPorte, Indiana was attacked on Sunday night by her uncle's pet monkey, reports the Northwest Indiana Times. The baby's grandmother was holding the infant in her arms while standing near the monkey's cage. When the baby started crying, the grandmother "then noticed the monkey had reached outside of its cage and grabbed the hood of the coat [the baby] was wearing," reports the Times.

According to the police, "the monkey began pulling on the hood, causing the baby's head to repeatedly strike the metal cage." The monkey let go of the hood, only to grab the baby's hair. Only when the monkey's co-owner reached into the cage and grabbed Sammy the monkey did he let go of the baby.

The baby was taken to the hospital where she escaped with relatively minor injuries: "rope burn" on her neck and red marks on the back of her head from striking against the cage.

"No matter how much you try to make them human, they're wild animals and they will attack. Sometimes unprovoked," Jamie Huss, assistant director of the Washington Park Zoo, told the Times. "They're unpredictable. I'd never have one as a pet."

I don't call that an attack. The monkey was eating the baby, he was trying to see her. Just because the parent was too stupid to move the baby away from the monkey's cage does not mean the monkey is vicious.

i have ben in the house with sammy before there is nothing wrong with him. cant help it that her grandmother was not smart enough not to have baby close to sammys pen. every adult should know no matter whatever kind of animal u keep kids away from pen.

This is exactly why you shouldn't keep wild animals caged for your own enjoyment.
