On Friday evening, First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on The Jay Leno Show via satellite to answer 10 questions as part of Leno's "10 @ Ten" bit. Wearing a floral blouse and with her hair swept back, the First Lady seemed at ease talking to Leno, though she claimed to be nervous.
Leno prefaced a compliment he paid to the First Lady by saying, "It sounds like I'm flirting, but you have a beautiful smile."
For the "10 @ Ten" portion of the show, Leno asked Mrs. Obama 10 random questions, among them:
What are Malia and Sasha dressing up for as Halloween? "I think that's top secret," the First Lady said, smiling. "The girls would kill me if I divulged their costumes."
Who disciplines the kids more -- the First Lady or the President? "I'll tell you who disciplines them the least," said Mrs. Obama, drawing ooh's from the audience, "and that's Grandma [the First Lady's mother who lives at the White House]. She's worthless on the discipline front."
What music does the First Lady have on her iPod? "Sting, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Robin Thicke...I'm really eclectic," she said.
What's the President's most annoying habit? It isn't leaving his suitcases in the hallway, as Malia once famously revealed during an interview, but besting the First Lady at tennis. "He beats me quite often," said the First Lady.
Would the President rather have world peace or have the Chicago White Sox win the World Series? "Now that's a tough one," Mrs. Obama joked. "If you asked him, he'd probably prefer world peace."
Who was the First Lady nervous to meet? "I'm nervous now!" she said, before naming names. "It was pretty nerve-wracking meeting the Pope, the Queen of England, and I was really nervous meeting Stevie Wonder for the first time because he is my musical hero."
Leno's final question was about the Obamas' Portuguese Water Dog, Bo, who turned a year old this month.
How did you celebrate Bo's birthday? "We had a really sweet celebration," the First Lady said. "He had a doghouse cake made out of veal, and he had his brother Cappy [who was Senator Ted Kennedy's dog] come over and we had party hats. We did this in the Rose Garden. It was so much fun. Cappy actually stole the rest of the cake off the table, but Bo didn't seem to mind."
