The general rule of thumb is that horses are over 14.3 hands tall, while ponies are 14.2 hands or under. A "hand" is four inches, originally named for the breadth, not length, of a human hand.
Ponies usually share a number of characteristics aside from their smaller stature which identify them as ponies. Their frame is generally quite a bit stockier than that or a horse, with a specific conformation type. They generally are much stronger, pound for pound, than horses. They tend to be hardier and more resistant to cold weather than horses. They also tend to be quite intelligent, and as a result can often be very stubborn.
Ponies also tend to have thicker and coarser manes and tails and a heavier coat than most breeds of horses. They may have shorter and sometimes stockier, legs, wider barrels, and thicker necks. Ponies' skeletal structures are often sturdier than many horse breeds, with heavier bones, although delicate pony breeds exist. Ponies may have smaller, broader heads than horses as well.
Because ponies are often short, but sturdy, they can make excellent pack animals, and they are often ideal for pulling small carts and carriages. Hackney ponies are often successful in driving classes at horse shows because of their athleticism and precision stepping.
The Welsh Pony breed is probably the most well known of the pony breeds, and come in a wide variety of types and sizes. Regardless of size, a Welsh Pony is always considered a pony. Welsh Ponies are beautiful and well mannered. A Shire, the biggest breed of draft horse, can only pull its own weight, but a Shetland pony can pull twice its own weight.
Horses and humans interact in many ways, not only in a variety of sport competitions and non-competitive recreational activities, but also in a working capacity including police work, agriculture, entertainment, assisted learning and therapy. Horses were historically used in warfare. Many products are derived from horses, including meat, milk, hide, hair, bone, and pharmaceuticals extracted from the urine of pregnant mares.
The Arabian horse and Quarter Horse is a horse breed and is always considered a horse regardless of size. They are often chosen as children's mounts due to their small size and easy going temperament. In fact, Falabellas, Caspians, and other miniature equine breeds are actually classified as horses, although they may be considerably smaller than most ponies. And Arabian horses may occasionally be shorter than 14.2 hands, but they are still horses.
However, horses and ponies of all breeds can be too smart for their own good and can often frustrate a new owner who does not have the experience to deal with an intelligent equine partner. So always remember, there are no bad horses or ponies, there are only bad trainers and owners. Although it is not always easy, most horses and ponies are happy to learn new habits.
