Thank you to CNN for their video and picture
According to videos from ABC News and Yahoo and CNN, Bitsy the cat is currently being evaluated by her veterinarian to determine her contention for the Guiness World Record world’s smallest cat.
Bitsy weighs 1.5 pounds, stands 6.5 inches tall, and measures 18.75 inches long. She is reportedly lighter and slightly longer than the current world record holder.
From her outward appearance, Bitsy does not appear as healthy as the larger cat with which she is pictured. Bitsy has a thin body condition, an unsteady stance, and bobbing of her head in a resting position. The larger cat, with whom the video shows Bitsy having an altercation, walks away with a normal gait while Bitsy struggles to regain her footing and wobbles while standing.
A pet’s body condition score has a very strong correlation with a pet’s overall health. This applies to pets that are both excessively thin and overweight or obese. For information on assessing your cat’s body condition, see Fat Felines- is your cat overweight or obese?
Hopefully, Bitsy’s veterinarian is evaluating all of Bitsy’s body systems to determine her overall health. Cats that fail to thrive often have abnormalities in the musculosketal, endocrine, immune, or cardiovascular systems that are congenital (starting before birth) or developmental (occur during the post-birth maturation process).
Further medical and media evaluation will determine of Bitsy is healthy and/or the world’s smallest cat.
