Kyla Duffy, of Happy Tails Books, is presenting a writing contest like no other. She is looking for short stories, essays, poems and artwork that are from children. There are two age groups for the contest:12 years old and younger and then 13-16 years old. There will be prizes awarded for each group. 1st place will receive $75 each, 2nd place will receive $50 each, the top five will receive a t-shirt and all participants will receive a book mark.
The children would need to answer one question for the start of their story, “I love my adopted pet because…..” The submissions should be no more than 1200 words. Parents are encouraged to provide support but they are not allowed to write or complete the work for the child. Parents will need to be involved in the submission online as it may proved to be a little difficult for some of the little ones. The children may write about their dog, cat, hamster or whatever as long as it was adopted. If you have a pet that was bought from a breeder or from a pet store, then your submission will not be allowed for this publisher. Happy Tails Books only publishes stories about rescue, shelter and adopted pets. The entries will go into a book called “I Love Buddy”.
The submissions should be done online at the Writing Contest Entry Form. There is a $10 suggested donation for the entry fee on each submission. Your child may enter as many submissions as they would like, as there is no limit. The deadline for submissions is June 15th, 2010. The winners will be announced in July and the book will be published in September 2010. There must be at least 40 submissions in each age group for the cash prizes to be awarded and for the book to be published. All submissions will be carefully considered to be included in the “I Love Buddy” book, whether the submission placed or not.

We've been working with Kyla on her German Shepherd book through our rescue, German Shepherd Rescue of Central Alabama. I am happy to say she has been wonderful to work with and the books turn out beautifully. I received my just published German Shepherd book yesterday and it's gorgeous!
April - That is great news. Glad her books are generating so much good for the animals. She is a great person and I have supported her for some time now and writing about her success and new upcomming books. I am very pleased that she has done this and now the writing contest should be a great book as well. This is a great way to get kids thinking about how wonderful pets are and for them to grow up like that really makes them a more kind person.
