Richard Stockman: guilty of animal cruelty

CC-by-SA-2.0 ~ Tanakawho  "Pomeranians like this was one breed that Mr. Stockton had at his facility"

UPDATE: Richard Stockman was not actually arrested but rather given a citation to appear in court over the dogs. There he was given a $1000 fine and 90 days in jail, which the judge actually suspended the 90 days. The judge also ordered his remaining 30+ dogs to be taken away from him after 30 days to allow him to get rid of them first on his own. He had to destroy his dog pens outside within 30 days and will be monitored to make sure he will never have dogs again. There is the question if he actually received "special treatment" from the Sheriff's department due to his son, R.H. Stockman is a deputy. A crime is a crime but in some places it seems people just look the other way at times. Maybe this was one of those times. What a shame for all those dogs and puppies!

Last October the story broke out about Rickard Stockman  and him being arrested for animal neglect with his puppy mill. At that time there were 43 dogs seized from the home and 40 more still at the site. The dogs were taken to Oxford Humane Society where after evaluation twelve dogs had to be humanely euthanized. The rest went up for adoption. On Wednesday, January 20th, 2010, Mr. Stockman pleaded guilty to 45 counts of animal cruelty in the Jasper County Justice Court.

With this plea, some don’t feel the man is getting what he deserved, but the case prosecutor was nervous about trying to ask for more since the case was apparently a little risky. Mr. Stockton will have to pay only a $1,000 fine but he will never be allowed to own or even care for any dogs used for breeding. This meant his breeding facility would have to be taken down. This is where the case prosecutor was trying to get the most out of the conviction. Stockman must pay the fine by April 20th to prevent jail time.

Jasper County Prosecutor Ashley Lewis said, “I did not want to lose this case and him continue to have breeding facilities out at their home.” Quote from the WDAM.com article written by Kevin Wheeler
