Time to take a break from all the Oscar post-mortems to focus on other, exciting industry news. Word is David Chase, the man behind the legendary 'Sopranos,' is preparing his feature film debut with a rock and roll drama set in the 1960s. (But what about that rumored return of Tony S. as a movie? Don't be so quick to fuggedaboudit!)
Deadline.com scored the exclusive news that after the controversial fade to black of HBO's mobster hit, "The Sopranos," its estemeed creator David Chase is starting to make a move towards a major new project: his feature film directorial debut.
Word is Chase, who also wrote the screenplay, is looking to late-summer/early fall start. Paramount Pictures will produce the film, which reportedly is a "music-driven coming-of-age saga...about a bunch of guys who form a rock band in the 1960s."
Bada-bing!
Chase's film is scheduled for release as a Paramount Vantage film, even though the studio shuttered its specialty division in 2009, in a bid to reinforce the indie vibe of the project. (Think "Babel" and "There Will Be Blood.")
As for the possibility of a long-rumored big screen version of "The Sopranos?" Deadline's Mike Fleming was careful to report, "While a 'Sopranos' movie might not be as dead as Jimmy Hoffa, it is nowhere right now. This Paramount Vantage film is first priority for Chase."
However, TV fans can take heart. Chase is still writing, producing and directing episodes of HBO's eagerly awaited mini-series "A Ribbon of Dreams," which focuses on the early days of Hollywood.

Man I would love to see a Sopranos movie!
I think it will happen at some point. WB had great success with "Sex and the City," so why wouldn't a "Sopranos" film follow suit?
