Revealing plenty of bite over the Thanksgiving holiday, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" continued to dominate the box office, earning $42.5 million and a total of $66 million for the Wednesday-Sunday period to lead the Weekend Final Five. "New Moon" has now risen to a massive $230.7 million in its second weekend.
However, the surprising strength of "The Blind Side" revealed its underdog theme is translating outside of the multiplex. The top box office attraction for Thanksgiving Day, "The Blind Side" came within a few yards of topping "New Moon," earning $40.1 million for the weekend and $57.5 million for the five days. The Sandra Bullock-Tim McGraw led true football story also crossed the heralded $100 million mark to post a rapidly growing total of $100.3 million to date.
As for the rest of the Weekend Final Five? Leftovers were in order as the "Moon/Blind" juggernaut powered their way through the holiday. The end of the world epic "2012" drew $18 million for the weekend, and $25.6 million for the five days, rising to $138.8 million to date. A Disney twosome rounded out the Friday Night Five with "Old Dogs" making $16.8 million for the weekend from 3,425 runs and $24.1 million for the five days. "A Christmas Carol" brought in $16.5 million, which brought it over the $100 million mark to reach $105.4 million.
Bubbling under the Weekend Final Five was the R-rated action pic "Ninja Assassin," which took sixth place and $13.1 million for the weekend and $21 million for the five days from 2,503 locations. The Weinstein Company's limited bow of "The Road" brought in $1.5 million from 111 theaters for the weekend, and $2 million for the five days.
And, Disney's specially-priced limited engagement of its highly anticipated hand-drawn animated feature "The Princess and the Frog" debuted with an estimated $1.14 million from two locations for a screen average of $571,179. "The Princess and the Frog" sings its way into a national release on December 11.
