Hollywood is finally catching up to bringing the lives of Nelson and Winnie Mandela as major motion pictures. Oscar winner Morgan Freeman is about to reveal his portrayal of the famed South African leader in Clint Eastwood's much-Oscar buzzed about "Invictus" on December 11. Now, word is another Oscar winner has been tapped to play Winnie Mandela in a new film: Jennifer Hudson.
“I was compelled and moved when I read the script,” Hudson confirmed to Variety.
South African director Darrell J. Roodt ("Yesterday") is co-writing and directing the film, which will chronicle the tumultuous life of Mandela, from her tireless crusade to end Apartheid and the challenges presented during her ex-husband's 27 years in jail and beyond.
“Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman," Hudson added. "I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”
No other production or casting details have been confirmed as of yet.
