20th Century Fox may have had mixed results with their venerable "Alien" and "Predator" franchises over the last two decades. Fox's "AVP" mash-ups also made the blogosphere run red with fanboy disappointment. Yet, the possibilities of reviving the individual franchises are too freakin' exciting to ignore. While a proposed "Alien" prequel continues to gestate, it is "Predators" that will first explode out of the gate in 2010.
Currently in production, the great Robert Rodriguez (pictured right) is serving as producer and writer of this new generation of alien menace. Nimrod Antal ("Armored," "Vacancy") is helming Rodriguez's richly nihilistic take on the franchise, where both man and alien are the predators in a sadistic hunt. Those genre film fans bothered by the "AVP" films are in for “a very pleasant surprise” of the familiar and the visceral thrills Rodriguez is known for.
“The original film was as good as it was because of the practical," Antal (pictured above left) said. "It was a guy in a suit, it was the jungle. We stay true to that.”
Don't expect the mega-brawn of an Arnold Schwarzenegger to lead "Predators," though. Despite the macho bravado of the script, Oscar winner Adrien Brody and Topher Grace are fighting not only against type but a cast that includes Danny Trejo, Alice Braga, UFC champ Oleg Taktarov and Walton Goggins from "The Shield."
“We are trying to stay with the original as far as the monster and the atmosphere and the tone of the film,"Antal added. "But, we are trying to do something new and contemporary”.
Expect "Predators" to tear up screens in 2010.
