Come on now! A 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' prequel without Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? Find out the details behind the possible project based on the film that spawned the birth of 'Brangelina' and why it won't feature the two most watched movie stars of the age.
Next to sequels, "reboots" have become a widespread disease around Tinseltown. Now, word from New York magazine's Culture Vulture column is a surprising variation of said infection has hit Regency Enterprises. It has put into development a sort-of prequel to its notorious 2005 hit, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," the action thriller that first paired Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and created a media culture of its own.
According to the Vulture piece, the project titled "Jones" will serve as an origins story centering on a pair of twentysomething spies who assume the identity of a married couple after graduating from agency training. The plot mirrors the original "Smith" film, which featured Pitt and Jolie as married spies who have been assigned to rub each other out. Oscar-winning writer/producer Akiva Goldsman ("Hancock," "I Am Legend") will produce the new feature.
Media bloggers are already questioning the logic of such a project. As to why neither Pitt and Jolie would probably not contribute their incredibly known "brand name" to "Jones?" Aside from the obvious (why would they want to?), observers acknowledge it would ultimately be a case of simple economics. In an ironic twist, Pitt and Jolie are simply too expensive a commodity these days.
Welcome to the fiscally prudent Hollywood of 2010.
