You may think you know your friends and family members well enough to know their style, but even if you do, you should be careful when selecting clothing for holiday gifts.
What not to buy:
Anything size-sensitive. As much as many of us love our shoes, they rarely make good holiday gifts, unless someone has specified a specific pair and size she wants. Even if you know someone’s size and taste, fluctuations in size and comfort make shoes a risky bet. The same is true for fitted jackets, skirts, and especially jeans (just think of how many pairs of jeans you try on when seeking a new pair).
Instead, stick with chic and non-size-sensitive accessories, or clothing with XS-S-M-L-XL size denominations if you know your giftee’s size.
Some of your safest bets:
Shawls and scarves.
Whatever the giftee’s personal style, most women can always use another scarf or shawl, especially this time of year. With the fluctuating winter weather in New Orleans, it’s always easier to carry around a scarf in your bag than a coat or sweater; plus a scarf can add a touch of color or shine to an otherwise ordinary outfit. Don’t buy a neutral scarf. Instead, buy one with something special: an interesting texture like a sateen finish or sequin edging, or a bold print or color. Check out some of the scarves featured in the slideshow, all available at Macy’s.
Clutches and totes.
Handbags can be expensive gifts, as well as risky ones. Women have particular tastes when it comes to a bag they’ll use every day. If you want to purchase a bag as a gift, it’s best to stick with either a tote (a larger bag she can use to carry not only a wallet, but books and files, a beach towel, or sunscreen) or an evening bag. Check out the beautiful Glitterati evening bag on sale now at Banana Republic pictured above in silver, also available in gold and pale pink. For other options, check out the clutches sold by Macy’s and Dillard’s, or for less expensive options, Express and Forever 21.
Fashion jewelry.
If you are a seeking a luxury gift for your girlfriend or partner and want to buy fine jewelry, turn to a retailer or designer synonymous with luxury, life Tiffany’s. But for a more casual purchase (say, under $100, or under $50), fashion jewelry can make a perfect gift as long as you have a sense of the giftee’s style. Check out the slideshow for some fabulous options: a “statement necklace” available for only $24.95 at New York & Company, or a long stylish necklace perfect for everyday wear available at The Limited.
