Effortless beauty in the New Orleans heat

With May temperatures hitting 90+ degrees, New Orleans is in for some brutally hot, sultry summer weather. For women, this most likely means three months of gauzy sundresses, or shorts and tank tops. These wonderful beauty products and services, however, can help enhance your summer look by making you extra luminous:

1)   Nail strips

It can be frustrating to maintain the perfect pedicure or to invest in a bunch of “summery” nail polish colors for the summer. One smart purchase to consider: colorful nail strips. These are essentially panels of dried nail polish that you just rub onto your nails and then file away the edges for the perfect fit. You can buy Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Strips for about $9.99 at Walgreens: these come in various colors and some wild prints (like fish-net). You can also purchase a similar, French manicure version of the product at the Sephora at Lakeside Mall.

2)   A high-quality hair straightener

New Orleans humidity is notorious and can make hair frizzy and unmanageably – heavier than it already feels against your skin. Inexpensive hair straighteners either won’t work, or you’ll have to run them along the same piece of hair ten times, which can take a lot of time. The Paris Parker Aveda Salons in New Orleans often use the Croc Turbo Ion straightener (you can also purchase it online for a little less through amazon.com). This straightener heats up to 450 degrees and works on all hair textures and thicknesses. It will save you a lot of time and keep hair feeling soft and silky.

3)   Garnier HerbaShine

Yet another product you can pick up at your local Walgreens, for under $10. Most salon hair stylists will tell you that home hair dyes contain ammonia, but this product is easy to use and ammonia-free. Rather than spending $75+ at the salon to enhance your color for summer, why not do it yourself instead?

4)   Planet Beach spray tan

Instead of baking in the sun all day, doing potentially irreparable damage to your skin, stick to the sunblock and get a very realistic looking Mystic spray tan at Planet Beach, which has several locations throughout New Orleans. The process takes about a minute and lasts up to about ten days, and won’t leave you looking orange. Spray tans are pricey (around $40), but a monthly membership is just slightly over the price of a single tan and – if you want to look tan all summer without the skin damage – may be well worth it.
