Bet you can’t guess what the Number One cause of accidents in the workplace is! Here’s a hint:
It’s NOT accidentally stabbing your boss with a letter opener!
It’s slipping and falling down. Millions or workers each year are injured by slipping and falling in the workplace. The reasons for this are pretty obvious if you think about it. And it’s high time we each thought about it because safety in the workplace is an attainable goal we can all work toward. So let’s consider some of the hazards:
Reason Number One
In every office or plant, there’s always at least one guy who sloshes his coffee all the way from the break room back to his workspace. He’s oblivious to his sloppy behavior. He has no idea that his carelessness could cause someone to slip and fall. He makes no effort to clean up his mess.
Reason Number Two
Your company is full of people. Anytime you put a bunch of people together in one location, weird stuff happens.
- The lady in accounting is eating her cinnamon roll while she walks down the hallway.
- An applicant tracks rainwater all the way from the front door to human resources.
- The guy in receiving spills lighter fluid while refilling his lighter.
- The receptionist drops her lunch as she’s walking back to her desk.
All these accidents make for a slippery floor. Can someone please call the janitor? While the janitor is being called, Miss Lambert from payroll strolls down the hallway on her break and BANG! She slips and falls rupturing a vertebrae. It takes her six weeks to recover.
There was safety in the workplace that day except for that one little stretch of hallway during that 20 minutes it took the janitor to respond.
Remember: Safety in the workplace is no accident!
Comments
You forgot to mention: LAZINESS. Everyone notices that spill on the floor and pages the janitor instead of getting a paper towel and taking 5 seconds to clean it up!
It's amazing how many people have told me, in Corporate safety reviews, "Yeah...I saw it, but nobody fixed it." I follow up with, "Well, then what did YOU do about it?!?!"
And they "splosh" around.
