May 39th/40th : Where will you be?

This year’s Capital Fringe Festival will offer hundreds of performing arts attractions including artists previously seen at the fringe festival. One show in particular, May 39th/40th written by Callie Kimball and directed by Christy Denny is no stranger to the D.C. stage. Written as May 39th first, with the 40th part added on later, Kimball places this show in the future (the year 3009) with various sci-fi and comedic elements. Introduced in the 2006 Capital Fringe Festival, Kimball’s play quickly sold out receiving acclaim as “the play with the orange.” This year, Kimball and Denny bring the show to The Bodega at The Trading Post starting Saturday July 11th at 9pm and running until July 24th.

A sci-fi play is a rare occurrence in theatre, as fantasies, dramas, or comedies are often the meat and potatoes of the genres in theatre. Therefore, because this brave new world places the audience in unfathomable waters, introduces them to new concepts, and teaches them new terms, the content envelopes the audience rather than the audience injecting themselves into the world.
